Categories All What's up everyone! Today's blog post is something different than what I usually do, I have interviewed huge streetwear figure John Melchico, otherwise known as @blvckmvnivc. I have found out some of the answers you would be interested to know and also ones I want to know! It's a special interview for me because I have followed John on instagram for a long time now and he was actually one of the people that inspired me into becoming a fashion influencer and it is only as of lately I have got into contact with him, the lad is very down to earth and so humble, so John let me know when we are linking up bro! PROFILE Name: John Melchico Location: Manchester, UK Age: 27 Occupation: Creative Director at Only The Blind Okay so I will begin with some questions related to your new clothing label then I'll ask some more general questions relating more directly with you. Here's a big question many people are always wanting to know, was it that inspired you to start Only The Blind? During my time even at the beginning of social media, starting to document my style and love for fashion I had always envisioned my life from there on to dedicate my life to fashion, did I know it would lead to me becoming a creative director? No, in all honestly but I knew with my hard work and passion it would create opportunities for myself eventually, I always say you put in what you get out. It didn't take a genius, the reality of having a strong following community behind me already to couple a brand together I knew it would be powerful and I think at the time when I was offered the position of Creative Director, my directors knew that as well. So fast forward here I am Creative Director of Only The Blind. My inspiration to start it begins with me I had to convince myself way back I have to make my time worth while, the more I got into social media the following grew so now its not just me leading myself to inspire me everyday, its the people who follow me that always push me to keep striving for new heights, so I thank every single person who has supported me to this day I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for all of you. Where does your inspiration for the brand come from to design new pieces? The generation we're currently apart of is led by amazing talented visionaries like Kanye, Jerry and Virgil, these are the people I always looked up too before the brand existed so anyone that had followed me knows my type of aesthetic and style, designing Only The Blind I try to ensure the collections are built on the accordion trend but to not overly design something specifically based on that example, it's seeing whats popping now and whats to come and find the happy medium, I don't see Only The Blind being a trend setter NOW. For the future, of course but I know I have to dictate the brands pace at all times, I don't ever want the brand to run before it can walk so understanding that thought process and knowing whats best for the brand sets the tone for the collections. Do you have any personal favourites from the OTB collection? The bombers, why? For people who don't know the sheer amount of samples it took to get it right from the get go, the anxiety, the sleepless nights, never about chasing "perfection", its chasing constant progress, overseeing to scrutinizing the design until I knew it was ready to go. Well what's next for the brand and is there any release date you can give for the next collection to drop? Collection 2 titled "CULT" will be made available in May but no specific date as of yet. Where do you want the brand to be in a few years from now? I envision the brand to be at that point where it'll be in a hell of a lot of stores worldwide but stores that suit the brand rather than just dish it out to anyone, I carry a lot of responsibility to the brand so end of the day it's my baby! Whatever happens in the next 2 or 10 years, I know it won't fail, I worked too damn hard to get here for the brand to not succeed plain and simple, Only The Blind will become one of the biggest brands in the world. Now to the more general questions, so I love your Instagram and I'm sure thousands of people look to you for inspiration, what's the number 1 tip for people wanting to get into content creating? Research, research, research, find pages you like, find accounts you fuck with that match your style and aesthetic. Create content of variety, something that always catches your viewers eyes and leads them to aspire, inspire others to follow what your doing, stay active and main, number 1 tip HAVE FUN! Enjoy what you do and show the world. Is there any advice you can give to those wanting to collaborate with brands? Brands select the person, unless the person has a power of following behind them to be in a position to call a play, until then keep working hard and make enough noise for brands to hear you. And also any tips for getting featured on big fashion accounts? Tag related pages that you feel would benefit featuring your work and stick with them, they will see you and reblog you if they feel your content is right for them. Also John, I'm sure not as many people would recognise you for your posts as John Melchico but more for the username you've built your career upon, BlvckMvnivc, how'd that name come about? Good question, at the time when I was starting my Instagram account i needed a name besides mine, I didn't wanna be known just as John Melchico, I wanted an alter-ego, someone I would always dream of becoming. At the time I was watching a horror film called "MANIAC". This bit sounds weird but I fucked with the concept someone who killed people and collected their scalps (film was fucked up for real) but like I said I fucked with the concept of being crazy obsessed about something, obviously not killing people and cutting scalps but the word maniac made sense to me, with black it's all I wore colour-wise at the time, put the two together - BLACK MANIAC, the correct spelling was not available so I flipped A's for V's, from there the birth of BLVCKMVNIVC. Do you have any favourite Instagrams to follow at the moment and why? Man there's so many that inspire me if I named em all wouldn't be enough room, to be honest I'm a fan of everyone on IG, whatever or however you represent yourself long as your having fun with what your doing you got my support. Sounds dope. Is there anything else you'd like to comment on? I will be in Paris June 25th and New York July 15th so if your reading this, link up and vibe with me, I'll be there for a few days so take me on a tour in your city, I will look forward to meeting you all. That's it, I hope some questions were answered and you found the interview interesting, you can check out John's clothing line by clicking the button at the top or visit his instagram here: @blvckmvnivc
